France's combination of high net-worth crypto residents, relatively accessible property records, and a legal system that often treats crypto theft as a lower priority than violent crime creates a perfect storm for attackers.

Code is law, but narrative is leverage. The narrative around self-custody has been romanticized: "Be your own bank." But being your own bank also means being your own security guard. And most people are not trained for that.

Core: Tracing the Ghost in the Liquidity Protocol

Let me break this down through the lens of liquidity architecture, because that's where the real economic impact lives.

When a victim loses $1 million to a wrench attack, that isn't just a personal tragedy. That $1 million was likely supplying liquidity to Aave, staked in Lido, or parked in a yield-bearing stablecoin pool. The removal of that capital from DeFi protocols creates a ripple: reduced liquidity depth, increased slippage, and, in worst cases, a bank-run dynamic on smaller lending markets.
